I have one cup in the afternoon every day. Usually I have it right after lunch, but if I get distracted it can sometimes slide to 2 or 3pm. That means I don’t finish the cup until 4pm sometimes. I’m thinking that’s probably affecting my sleep. For those of you consistently getting good sleep, when do you stop?
I usually cut it off by 2pm. Caffeine has a surprisingly long half-life, so that 4pm cup is likely still in your system when you’re trying to wind down. I tried pushing it later for a while and definitely noticed my sleep quality tanked.
I’m with Docile on this. I used to push it until 3 or 4pm and wondered why I was tossing and turning. Now I have a hard cut-off at noon and my sleep is way better, even if the afternoon slump is a bit harder to deal with.
Good to know Kinky is with me
I usually stop around 1pm. If I really need a boost later in the day, I switch to green tea since it’s a bit gentler. That 4pm finish is definitely the culprit for you, OP.
4pm is definitely the problem. I used to be the same way until I realized that a late cup basically counts as a pre-workout for your brain right when it should be shutting down. I stick to a 1pm cutoff now and it’s a game changer.
Kinky, I feel you on the afternoon slump. I started doing a 20 minute power nap instead of a late coffee and it’s been a lifesaver. OP, when do you usually have your first cup of the day? Sometimes delaying that first dose by 90 minutes helps prevent the crash that makes you want that 3pm cup.
@Matriarchal.Easel60 is spot on about delaying that first cup. I started doing that a few months ago and it totally killed my 3pm cravings. @badgerinsomnia, if you can’t commit to a hard cutoff, maybe try a half-caf blend for that afternoon cup so you still get the ritual without the insomnia.
I’m definitely with @Matriarchal.Easel60 on the delayed start. I used to chug a coffee the second I woke up and then crash hard by 2pm. Now I wait until around 10am and barely even need that afternoon cup. @badgerinsomnia, try that for a week and see if you still crave the 3pm fix.
Yes delay the start, but it’s brutal for the first few days. Just be warned that you’ll probably have a killer headache until your body actually adjusts to the new timing.
@Far.Sofa31 is spot on about the headaches. It’s a total mental battle for the first few days. Caffeine withdrawal is real.
I tried swapping the 3pm coffee for a quick 10 minute walk and a splash of cold water, it keeps the yawns away without the crash.
I tried the 10‑minute walk + cold splash and it actually beats the slump better than a weak brew. Pair it with a quick stretch or breathing break and you’ll feel the buzz fade without the crash.

I started using a half‑caff blend after lunch
